UWP Study Abroad and College Credit
Academic Program for UWP Participants
UWP Global Education Program offers a fantastic option for its participants! Eligible students are able to earn 12 academic credits (full-time equivalent) while traveling abroad with Up with People. This program is delivered through our partnership with Florida Southern College (FSC).
Each semester, UWP students have the option to enroll in three 4-credit courses during the semester. Transcripts for successfully completed coursework are issued by FSC and are transferable to other universities, with approval by the receiving university. Enrollment at Florida Southern College is not a requirement for participation. Select financial aid awards may also be applied toward the UWP program fee.
This academic program is optional and open to any UWP participant who meets the requirements specific to academic program enrollment. (Click the link below for more details). This criteria varies depending on whether the applicant is a US or international student and the level of schooling already completed prior to participation in Up with People.

UWP continues to be the most unique global education opportunity available and this new academic program is offered as a compliment to our already strong experiential learning and workshop-based curriculum. ALL Up with People participants will participate in each core component of our program – international travel, service-learning, intercultural living and performing arts.
Other Academic Credit Options
UWP has agreements with three affiliate U.S. universities who each award one semester’s worth of academic credit to any of their own students who travel in the UWP program as a semester or year abroad option. They also award up to one semester of credit to students who first complete the UWP program then enroll at their institution, either as a first-year (Freshman) or transfer student.
Specific credits can vary per student based on prior learning and academic degree area. For more details on these credit options, click on the university name below:
- Hawaii Pacific University in Honolulu, Hawaii
- Carroll University in Waukesha, Wisconsin
- Western New England University in Springfield, Massachusetts
These agreements make it possible for students to earn academic credit in the form of an equivalent course. Since 1995, more than 150 alumni have enrolled to complete undergraduate or graduate programs at these and other affiliate universities, utilizing their international education and leadership experiences they gained from travel with UWP.
Earn Credit at Your University
For students who plan to travel with UWP, we recommend enrolling in our Academic Program option in partnership with Florida Southern College. Contact the Study Abroad Office at your home university to understand the requirements to go abroad and transfer credit, and contact the UWP Admissions office to apply or for additional questions.
For students who traveled with UWP prior to July 2012, we encourage you to consider the options made available through agreements with our affiliate universities (above). If you are already enrolled at a college/university, we encourage you to discuss your options with an academic or study abroad advisor. We recommend developing an independent study plan prior to your UWP program, if possible. Up with People has resources to assist students seeking credit through independent study. Speak to an UWP Enrollment Advisor for more details.
