Up with People participants tour for one or two semesters while they...

  • Travel, live and learn with other young adults, working cooperatively while exploring the similarities and differences of people from other nations and cultures.

  • Perform in a high-energy, professionally produced show that uses the universal language of music to express hope for the world and celebrate each local community.

  • Impact communities through hands-on, interactive service projects; partner with local organizations to address a specific need and make a lasting difference.

  • Live with host families in dozens of communities; gaining insight to local culture, customs and language while sharing their own lifestyles and experiences.

  • Develop and refine leadership skills beneficial to any career or life path; gain unique access to political, corporate and social leaders and visit regional points of interest.

  • Earn academic credit by attending one of our partner universities or by arranging independent study through their own chosen school or program.

Application Criteria

If you're looking for a global education experience unlike any other, consider the Up with People program. Please review the following application criteria prior to completing an application:

  1. You must be between the ages of 17-29.
  2. A minimum of a high school or secondary school diploma (US students can apply during the second semester of their junior year in high school) is required.
  3. Participants must be in good physical and mental health.
  4. Participants must be willing and able to participate in all aspects of the program.
  5. Although background and experience in the performing arts is always welcome for the Up with People show, it is not a requirement for acceptance in our program.

The Up with People program is conducted in English, so it is highly recommended that an applicant have a comfortable knowledge of the English language. No language test is required, but applicants are strongly encouraged to take English classes prior to the beginning of the program, if needed.

To be considered for the Up with People program, you must complete an Online Application and Personal Interview.  The following are some personal attributes we look for in the application and interview.

  • Communications Skills: Because participants are often encountering new people and situations, the ability to communicate warmly and effectively is vital.
  • Character and Values: Among the expectations we have of our participants are the character traits of integrity, honesty, compassion and motivation to give.
  • Eager for International Travel: A participant's enthusiasm to experience other countries and cultures will offset the occasional difficulties of travel and living in unfamiliar situations.
  • Flexibility to Adapt: Participants demonstrate maturity and have the ability to be positive and flexible when encountering new people, cultures and adverse situations.
  • Motivated for Community Service: Much of the Up with People experience revolves around hands-on community service in a variety of venues.
  • Aptitude for Leadership: Many Up with People participants are leaders in their communities, or have a strong desire for leadership opportunities and learning.
  • Passionate About Making a Difference: Participants feel strongly about making a difference in their communities, countries and the world.
