Montevideo, Minnesota

During the Up with People program, participants travel in international
casts of 100+ people to cities on a multi-continent tour, experiencing
the cultural sights, sounds, and tastes of each community. From
blending in with the locals to acting like tourists – they learn to
explore and explore to learn. As students of the world, through
community service, regional learning and living with host families,
participants discover what makes each part of the world unique. The
experience has a positive impact on the community and for the sponsors
of the visit while the Up with People cast members discover their
capabilities and prepares them for their roles and responsibilities as
global citizens.
Up with People was
founded on the principle of using music as a means to communicate with
and inspire people. In each city the cast visits, participants perform
in a vibrant and moving musical stage show that brings the community
together, highlighting local partnering organizations and sparking
people to action in meeting the needs of their communities, countries
and the world.

The last time “Up with People’’ came to Montevideo was in April 1997
and Mayor Jim Curtiss rushed the entire cast to work piling sandbags on
the city’s main levee during the height of the record flood.
A
new cast is returning, and the mayor is ready to acquaint them with
sandbags as well. Montevideo is facing the prospect of spring flooding
again. The mayor hopes they will help fill 100,000 sandbags, just in
case. {more}

Host families are a key component of the Up with People experience.
Since 1965, more than 450,000 families in 38 countries have hosted Up
with People participants. They open their homes and their hearts to
young people from around the world. They are unfailingly warm and
welcoming; they have made the Up with People program an unparalleled
experience.
Host families give participants an insider's perspective on the
community they're visiting, its culture, language and customs. In turn,
host families benefit by gaining insight into the participants' home
countries.
Host Family Responsibilities
While the cast is in the community, you are asked to provide: a bed,
breakfast, dinner and limited transportation. Cast members are out in
the community during most business hours. Generally, one day during the
week's visit is reserved for host families and their participants to
spend time together, see the sights and enjoy local events.
Not surprisingly, many of the relationships that develop between
host families and Up with People participants last for years, even
lifetimes. By the end of the stay, many host families find they've
acquired an "adopted" child; participants feel as if they've gained a
new set of parents.
